What’s Hiding in Your Laundry?

Did you know that Staphylococcus  E. coli and salmonella may survive a few weeks, and the clothes in your laundry hamper may be a breeding ground for them?

We often throw all of the clothes in one hamper, which increases the spread of bacteria from damp towels, smelly rags and undergarments to other garments that may not be as bacteria-ridden. If you have the luxury of keeping dirty laundry separate great. If not, make sure to take a few extra precautions when doing your laundry

  • First, after you have emptied your laundry hamper, disinfect it. Never put clean clothes back into the hamper that has not been disinfected
  • After separating your laundry, don’t forget to wash your hands. You have been in contact with all sorts of lingering germs

Get rid of lingering laundry germs

  • Add one cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Vinegar kills bacteria, deodorizes your laundry and can even soften fabrics
  • Hydrogen peroxide is another option, and although the name sounds clinical. It is one of the most eco-friendly compounds to use. Keep in mind it may have a bleaching effect, so only use it on your whites. To sanitize and disinfect laundry, add one cup of hydrogen peroxide to the regular wash cycle
  • If you regularly use essential oils in your home. Consider adding two teaspoons of tea tree oil to wash load.
  • In warmer months, hang your clothes in the sun. Sunlight can kill germs
  • Clean your washing machine about once a month. Mix ¼ cup of baking soda. ¼ cup water and 2 cups of white vinegar. Pour into the receptacle (washer drum) and run through a regular cycle.
