National Smile Day

Turn that frown upside down and give us a grin! Smiling is contagious, and the world could use a little more of it. So flash those pearly whites, spread joy and happiness, and let the good times roll! Bring out that smile and make the world a better place! While wearing a smile is a great idea any day, it’s especially important on this one: National Smile Day.

It’s logical to assume that people have been smiling throughout human history. Even tiny babies quickly learn to smile when they see something they enjoy. Smiles have brought joy and delight to people of all ages for thousands of years, and smiling can even be beneficial for one’s health!

National Smile Day is an important part of National Smile Month, which takes place from the end of May to the end of June each year. Additionally, World Smile Day is another celebration dedicated to smiles, occurring in November.

Many people don't realize that smiling has numerous benefits for physical, mental, and overall health. Here are some of the amazing benefits of smiling that you can share with others to raise awareness on National Smile Day:

Smiling releases endorphins.  Although smiling is often a reaction to happiness, studies show that smiling can actually make a person feel happier. Even a fake smile can trigger the release of hormones associated with well-being!

Smiling can relieve stress. The endorphins released from smiling provide short-term relief from pain and can help prevent illness, protect against cancer, and provide other long-term health benefits.

Smiling helps people live longer. Research has shown that intense, genuine smiles are associated with a longer lifespan.

Smiling can lower blood pressure. Smiling, particularly when it’s linked to laughter, may reduce blood pressure, which benefits heart health.

So this National Smile Day, let’s celebrate the power of a smile!
